What Does Dental Implant Treatment Involve?

Dental implants have revolutionised the world of dentistry. If you’re looking for a long-term replacement for a lost natural tooth, implants could be just what you’ve been searching for.

What exactly are dental implants?

Dental implants are small titanium prostheses designed to replace the root of a missing tooth. They are placed inside openings in the jaw bone and once they have integrated into the bone tissue by means of a process called osseointegration, they can then be connected to a bridge, denture or dental bridge. Once an implant and the new prosthetic tooth are in place, the tooth will look exactly like a natural tooth and you will be able to enjoy the same level of functionality.

What does implant treatment involve?

Dental implant treatment involves 3 key stages: the first stage is to plan your treatment. Your dentist at Advance Dental  Clinic will use their expertise in combination with modern technology to determine if implant treatment is suitable for you and to identify the optimum site for your new implants. The second stage of treatment is to place the implants. This can be done under anaesthetic or sedation. It involves making an incision in the gum tissue and lifting the gum flap to access the jaw bone. A socket is drilled into the bone and the implant is secured. As the implant is made from titanium, which is a biocompatible material, it is able to integrate into the bone tissue. This is called osseointegration and it takes around 3-8 months. The final stage of treatment, which occurs once osseointegration is complete, is the placement of the new tooth or teeth. Once this is complete, your smile will look amazing for years to come!
