Do you have a broken tooth? If you’re in pain or you’re worried about your broken tooth getting worse or affecting the aesthetic of your smile, we are here to help!
What causes a broken tooth?
Accidents and injuries can cause damage to the teeth, but it is also possible for the teeth to become weak and brittle as a result of decay and gum disease. If you have a broken tooth or you’ve started to notice that your tooth is painful or sore, we advise you to get in touch as soon as possible. If the tooth is broken, we can use a range of techniques and treatments to prevent further damage, repair and restore the tooth or replace the tooth if it’s not salvageable.
When you come and see us, your Essex dentist will examine your mouth to ascertain the cause of the problem and the severity of the damage. This will help them to determine the best course of action in terms of treatment options.
Fixing a broken tooth
If your tooth is chipped and the damage is only minor, it can be possible to patch it up using a filling or a technique called dental composite. Composite is a tooth-coloured material, so you won’t be able to notice the difference between the composite and the rest of the tooth. If damage is more severe, a new crown may be recommended. Crowns are sometimes known as caps because they are placed over the top of your tooth. Crowns can be made from precious metals and ceramics. Porcelain crowns are very popular because of their aesthetic appeal. Once the crown is in place, it should last around 5 years. Every time you have a check-up, your dentist will have a look at the crown to make sure that it’s still in good working order.
If the tooth is so severely damaged that it cannot be restored, there’s no need to panic. We offer dentures, dental bridges and dental implants.
