Fighting Gum Disease

At Advance Dental, preventing and fighting gum disease are a priority and we do everything we can to try and make sure our clients have healthy teeth and gums. Gum disease is a common oral disease, which occurs when the gums become irritated as a result of harmful bacteria collecting in the mouth and releasing plaque acids. These plaque acids erode the enamel, increasing the risk of tooth decay, and irritate the gums, which causes them to become painful and inflamed. There are two main types of gum disease: mild gum disease, which is known as gingivitis, and advanced gum disease, which is known as periodontal disease or periodontitis. Gum disease is highly preventable, but once it hits, it can be difficult to treat and this is why swift action is always preferable. If you notice signs of gingivitis, it’s a good idea to see your dentist as quickly as possible, so that they can provide treatment, which will prevent the condition from advancing. Gingivitis can usually be treated effectively with good oral hygiene at home and cleaning treatments provided by your dentist or dental hygienist. The warning signs to look out for include bleeding gums, swelling and soreness. If gingivitis is left untreated, it becomes more serious and results in periodontal disease, which causes irreparable and irreversible damage to the gums and the bone structure beneath. Prevention is always better than cure, but if you have existing signs of gum disease, we will do everything we can to prevent infection from spreading and keep your teeth and gums as healthy as possible. With cases of advanced gum disease, we adopt a long-term plan, which involves regular sessions with our dentists and dental hygienists. We are also always on hand to offer preventative advice related to issues such as giving up smoking, effective oral hygiene techniques and healthy eating.
