Surgery Is the Only Cure for Dental Ankylosis, Says Colchester Dentist

August 5th, 2010

Dental ankylosis is the term given to a condition when the roots of a person’s milk or baby teeth do not dissolve properly, as they are intended to. In a normal situation, the roots of the baby teeth dissolve into the bone, thereby enabling the teeth to fall out on their own. In certain situations, however, this does not happen and the roots remain fused to the bone.

When it is the turn of the permanent tooth to develop in that spot, it does not have sufficient space to grow. As a result, that particular tooth remains smaller and lower than the ones adjoining it. The tooth opposite it, on the other jaw, also grows out of alignment because it does not have a tooth to oppose it.

There could be many reasons for this problem, but the most common one is heredity since this seems to run in families. This condition can also be caused by infection or an injury to the tooth. Another possible reason for this is that the child does not have proper bone growth, which could be due to diet reasons.

According to a dentist in Colchester, parents of a child with this condition have to allow it to be treated as soon as possible so that a whole host of dental problems can be avoided in the future. Doctors will have to do surgery to pull it out, but as a result of it the child will grow a set of permanent teeth that are placed straight and even.
