Chelmsford Dentist Dispels Myths about Dentistry

October 7th, 2010

Dentists are a very misunderstood lot, and there are many myths circulation about their profession. It is very common to come across a lot of adults who have an irrational fear of visiting the dentist. A Chelmsford dentist has taken the responsibility of dispelling some of the myths about dentistry because they are responsible for preventing a lot of people from getting timely medical help.

One of the most common myths that dentists have to face is that they have no consideration for the anxiety and fears of patients. Nothing could be further from the truth, and all one has to do is tell the dentist beforehand that one has abnormal levels of anxiety. The dentist will automatically adjust his or her style of treatment, and will offer more options for sedation which will enable the patient to have a very comfortable experience.

Another common myth is that one does not really need to see a dentist unless there is a cavity or any other problem, especially if one is scrupulous about oral hygiene. This myth too can cause a lot of problems because people do need to see a dentist regularly. Dental problems can come in various forms, and the dentist may spot some decay that occurs even if the person has been brushing and flossing regularly. This is also a good way to spot mouth cancer in its early stages.

People have to get correct information on how to maintain the health of their teeth and gums, and a talk with a dentist will be very useful. Call 01245 268 494 for a free consultation at Advance Dental Clinic in Chelmsford.

Overcoming dental phobia can be achieved with help from Brentwood dentist

July 18th, 2010

Extreme fear, also known as a phobia, can be very unpleasant if you suffer from it. It can cause panic, anxiety, stress and in severe cases lead to temporary paralysis or anxiety episodes. It can lead you to avoid any situation in which you might confront the thing it is you are afraid of. This may not be such a problem of your phobia is of snakes or spiders which are relatively easy to avoid and it is not harmful to you to do so. But what if you are afraid of the dentist. This could have serious detrimental effects on the health of your teeth that can cause pain, suffering and great expense in the future.

Dental phobia is often caused by a traumatic experience in the past, often during childhood. This can lead to developing a fear of visiting the dentist, even if it’s just for a check up. We all know the importance of dental check ups in helping to keep our teeth healthy and clean. Missing these for large periods of time will inevitably lead to dental problems occurring, which will ironically require more serious dental attention.

However, there are many ways top overcome dental phobia. Many phobias caused by bad experiences can be dealt with by just talking to a friendly dentist. Modern dentistry and dentists are very different from the, perhaps less caring, dentists of the past. They are also trained to deal with anxious and nervous patients. There are also a number of relaxation and breathing exercises that you can do to help you relax before an appointment. Other studies have found that aromatherapy and particularly the use of lavender oil help to relax nervous patients.

No matter how severe your phobia, you will be able to overcome it with the right help. Brentwood dentists are happy to talk you through any treatment and offer support if you suffer from any kind of dental phobia. Call 01245 268 494 for a free consultation at Advance Dental Clinic in Chelmsford

Dental phobias and how to handle them by a Colchester dentist

March 21st, 2010

A dental phobia is not a healthy thing as our teeth need to be kept in check by constant visits to the dentist. A Colchester dentist says that it is a big problem for a patient and will cause them untold problems, problems that can’t be fixed because they still won’t visit a dentist. The fears are of course completely unfounded with modern methods of pain control and the training that dentists get. Today a visit to the dentist is almost a pleasant experience, even the needle in the gums is painless due to the use of a gel on the gums, this deadens the area and makes the whole thing completely pain free. Some dentists use hypnosis, and in extreme cases of a dental phobia a general anaesthetic is given to put the patient right out. The fear may well be a deep founded one that is inherited, as are maybe our other most common of phobias; snakes, rats, spiders, birds, the darkness and all the things out most ancient of ancestors feared in everyday life. People with a fear of flying can now spend the day in a simulator and eventually beat it, but how do you get over a phobia of dentists? Maybe hypnosis will help in most cases, but whatever method we use it is essential that anyone suffering from this phobia gets some help; and sooner rather than later. This is one fear that will certainly come with consequences, unlike flying which means you’ll either have to go by sea or not go at all. However, not flying won’t usually bring any consequences, whereas a dental phobia can bring the sufferer a lot of problems with their teeth. It is therefore recommended by our dentist that in place of visits to the dentist a good, well planned and executed oral care program will go some way to balancing it. Sedation for the nervous patient

January 12th, 2009

Here at Advance Dental Clinic we often see people who are apprehensive about dental treatment, usually after a bad experience as a child. For some patients just spending a little extra time and talking to the patient is enough to help with there phobia, however for some patients, particularly those undergoing more extensive treatment we often need a little extra help.

The most predictable treatment we can offer uses sedation using a ‘valium’ based drug. Given in a slow controlled way, this drug can safely help the patient overcome their anxiety, while always keeping the patient awake, without the need for a full general anaesthetic.

If you feel this treatment would help please feel free to contact us arrange a consultation and assessment.
